Okay, yesterday it was official! I accepted a position with QSI (Quality Schools International). I will be the Intensive English teacher at Baku International School in Azerbaijan.
No, I didn't know where Azerbaijan was at first--- and that was scary! However, I had many great signs setting my mind and heart at ease. First and foremost, I was connected to the Vice President of QSI and he (from the get go) thought that I would make a great fit in Baku. Secondly, I really felt like the Director of Baku International was open and honest about the positions that were available and about Azerbaijan itself. All of my questions were answered honestly and candidly-- which really helped. BUT-- the kicker was the day I was leaving for my interview (in Boise)-- I was sitting in the North Platte airport waiting on the plane and of course talking to the people around me, and who do I meet?? A man from Russia. Why is this important? Well, because he KNEW where Azerbaijan was and told me a bit about it! It helped so much to hear that Azerbaijan--- Baku in particular was a place that I would be interested in living, learning, and being a part of. It was also great to finally hear someone say-- "Azerbaijan! Of course I know where that is, I am from Russia!" Well, maybe I didn't need all of those words-- but the fact that I was unsettled about the country and just needed a sign telling me that I was moving in the right direction--- that was exactly what I needed!
Anyway, the pieces all began to fit after that-- and I am officially leaving the United States in August.
